Vehicle scheduling

Vehicle blocks from the timetable,
for every variant.

Replan Transit builds vehicle blocks with layovers and deadheads from the timetable, derives shifts and driver requirement, and calculates operating cost for every planning variant.

Vehicle scheduling decides which vehicle runs which trips in sequence. Fleet size, shifts and a large part of operating cost follow from it. In service planning, every route or timetable change needs these figures again. Replan Transit calculates them in the same tool where the route and the timetable are made.

Process

From the timetable to vehicles, drivers and cost.

01

Timetable

Departures as single trips or interval windows, per service type and service day. Imported from GTFS or your current planning system.

02

Vehicle blocks

Trips are chained into blocks with layover and deadhead rules. The Gantt chart shows the day of every vehicle.

03

Shifts and drivers

Shifts per block with layover, deadhead and relief inputs. Paid hours with weekend and holiday premiums, driver requirement with a reserve factor.

04

Cost

Hours, kilometres and fleet depreciation give the annual cost per line, service type and vehicle type. The result opens in Excel.

Features

What vehicle scheduling shows.

Fleet requirement

Vehicles per line and day, with a fleet reserve.

Deadhead and layover

Deadhead, turnaround and layover time per block and in total, as figures and in the Gantt chart.

Line groups

One vehicle serves several lines. Blocks are built across the line group.

Shifts

Paid hours per shift, weekend and holiday premiums, driver requirement from productive hours.

Cost model

Vehicle types with purchase price, service life, maintenance and energy. An operator cost model with drivers, workshop, depot and overhead.

Variants

Every route or timetable change gets its own blocks, shifts and cost, compared with the baseline. Transit service planning

Replan Transit builds blocks and shifts for planning. Duty rosters over several weeks and dispatching in live operations belong in a scheduling and dispatch system.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions.

What is vehicle scheduling?

Vehicle scheduling chains the trips of a timetable into vehicle blocks, with turnaround, deadhead and layover times. It gives the fleet requirement and is the basis for crew scheduling and operating cost.

What is the difference between a block and a shift?

A block is the day of a vehicle, a shift is the working day of a driver. Replan Transit derives shifts from the blocks, with paid hours, premiums and a reserve factor.

Can one vehicle serve several lines?

Yes. With line groups, Replan Transit builds blocks across several lines. Fleet requirement and cost are calculated for the whole group.

Does Replan Transit replace our scheduling and dispatch system?

No. Replan Transit calculates blocks, shifts and cost for planning variants. Rosters over several weeks and dispatching in operations stay in the scheduling and dispatch system. Replan compared →

What data does vehicle scheduling need?

The timetable as GTFS or from your current planning system, your vehicle types, layover and deadhead rules and cost parameters. We set these up with your planners in the first weeks. Onboarding and training →
